GW's Cone Named A-10 Softball Player of the Week; URI's Rogers, Villarreal Win Pitcher, Rookie Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington junior Jenna Cone was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week while Rhode Island senior Becca Rogers was named Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. Rhody teammate Sami Villarreal was named Rookie of the Week. The awards are based off performances from March 4-10.
Cone put on an amazing power display to help GW complete a 7-0 week. The California native hit .636 (14-22) with five home runs and three doubles, good for a 1.455 slugging percentage. She posted 17 RBIs and 14 runs scored for the week. Cone homered in four out of five games at the Colonial Classic over the weekend, highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning of a 5-4 victory Manhattan on Sunday which made her GW's career home run leader with 37. She also went deep twice in Saturday's 10-1 victory over Manhattan. Cone recorded hits, runs, and RBIs in all seven games, highlighted by three three-hit efforts.
In three starts, Rogers was 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA in 19.0 innings of work at the Charleston Invitational. She pitched a one-hit shutout against the ACC's North Carolina State on Friday. On Saturday, she carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Marist, and on Sunday she pitched 6.0 shutout innings against Bryant. For the week, Rogers had 23 strikeouts against just six walks. She allowed two earned runs and seven hits in 19.0 innings.
In five games at the Charleston Invitational, Villarreal batted .400 (6-for-15) with one home run, one double, four runs scored, four RBI, four walks and two stolen bases. She had a .526 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 10 of her 19 plate appearances. The Cypress, Texas, product helped lead Rhode Island to four wins in five games.
