Davidson, Dayton Take #A10MTEN Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Davidson's Camden Mazzoni and Dayton's Joe DeMarco were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. On the women's side, Tiara Higuchi of Rhode Island and VCU's Anna Rasmussen shared Women's Player of the Week accolades, while Rhody teammate, Paulina Loredo, was named Rookie of the Week.

Mazzoni, a sophomore from East Dennis, Mass., scored a pair of wins against Florida Southern, giving up just one game in his singles match at 6-0, 6-1 and then teaming with Douglas MacIntosh for a 6-3 doubles win. It was the duo's third straight win and team-best eighth on the season. Mazzoni sealed up a 4-3 win versus Bethune-Cookman by winning the final team point in a three-set match, coming from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

DeMarco won both of his singles matches this weekend, beginning with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wright State's William Morton at No. 5 singles. He also made his debut at the top spot in the lineup for singles play at No. 1, defeating Wittenberg's Martin Mora, 7-6, 6-4. The freshman from Erie, Pa., went 1-0 in doubles play for the weekend, defeating Xavier's No. 2 doubles team with Langford Hills by a 6-4 margin.

Higuchi, a junior from Mississauga, Ontario, won in both singles and doubles, leading Rhode Island to a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart in the team's lone match of the week. Playing at No. 2 singles, Higuchi won her fifth straight singles match, dominating Brianne Lauria 6-0, 6-2. Higuchi also teamed with freshman Paulina Loredo for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. 

Rasmussen, a senior, went undefeated in both singles and doubles play against Penn State and FAU. Against PSU, the Holte, Denmark, product took down her opponent in No. 2 singles in three sets and in No. 1 doubles, she and her partner Melissa Ifidzhen won the only doubles victory for VCU that day. Against FAU, she clinched the victory for VCU after defeating her opponent in three sets in No. 2 singles. She is now 10-2 with one unfinished match this season in singles play.

Playing at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles, Loredo won both of her matches to help the Rams sweep Sacred Heart, 7-0, in the lone match of the week. The freshman from Newport Beach, Calif., won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to beat Lauren Santarsiero, then teamed with Tiara Higuchi for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
