Klah, Smith, Simmons, Newman named A-10 Track & Field Performers of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s Kornelius Klah and Jaylen Simmons were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Track & Field Performers of the Week, respectively, While VCU’s Emmanuel Walker was named Men’s Rookie of the Week. VCU’s Kayla Smith and Aliyah Newman were named Women’s Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively, and Mason’s Kelly-Ann Downer earned Women’s Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, the first of the 2019 outdoor season, are for meets held March 11-17.
Klah snagged a pair of second-place finishes at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday in Miami. The Fairless Hills, Pa., product took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27 and also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.85. His time in the 110 hurdles ranks first in the Atlantic 10 and is the 23rd fastest time in the country. His 400-meter hurdle time is the second-fastest in the A-10 and 18th fastest in the nation.
Simmons posted a trio of strong finishes at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday in Miami. The sophomore from Waynesboro, Va., finished fifth in the shot put (16.17 meters) and seventh in the discus (49.46 meters) and hammer throw (46.42 meters). All three of his marks rank second in the Atlantic 10. His throws in the shot put and discus also qualified him for the IC4A Championships.
Walker won the 400-Meter Hurdles at the Miami Hurricane Invitational after posting a time of 52.80. The freshman from Lynchburg, Va., currently holds the top time in the A-10 and is top-10 in the East Region.
Smith won the 400-meters at the Miami Hurricane Invitational, posting a time of 53.94. Her mark currently ranks first in the A-10 and second in the East Region. The Ashburn, Va., product also was a member of the 4x400m Relay Team that took home first place and has the top time in the A-10.
Newman, a native of Chesterfield, Va., finished second in the Triple Jump at the Miami Hurricane Invitational, posting a leap of 12.51m. Her mark currently ranks first in the A-10 and sixth in the East Region.
Downer registered three solid finishes to begin the outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday in Miami. She ran the third leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that took fourth in 45.64 - the fastest time in the A-10. The native of Kingston, Jamaica, finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.10 - the third-fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season. She also took 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.58 - the second fastest in the A-10 this year.
