Schaub, Mikulski Chosen for Weekly A-10 Baseball Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Richmond freshman Brian Schaub was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player and Rookie of the Week, while Fordham sophomore Matt Mikulski was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week. The awards were announced Monday for games played March 25-31.
Schaub led Richmond to a 3-1 week, including a three-game sweep of A-10 foe George Mason. The designated hitter from Hatfield, Pa., hit .600 (6-for-10) with a .750 on base percentage and slugged 1.800. Over the three-game series with Mason, he drove in 11 runs, with four of his six hit being home runs. He scored eight times and drew three walks, two intentional as well as reaching base three times with hit by pitches. Schaub drove in three runs with two homers in Friday’s opener against the Patriots. He was 3-for-4 with seven RBI Saturday, driving six runs in during the seventh inning thanks to a grand slam. He then hit another solo home run in the bottom of the fifth of the finale on Sunday.
Mikulski, a southpaw from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., earned his third win of the season on Friday in the Rams' series opener at Rhode Island. He tossed seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks, while tying his career-high with 10 strikeouts. It was his second straight start with double-digit strikeouts.
