NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – GW sophomore Alessandra Ponce and Fordham junior Madie Aughinbaugh were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. Dayton’s Alyssa Cacini earned rookie of the week honors.  The awards are for games played April 1-7.

Ponce hit .750 (9-for-12) with a 1.583 slugging percentage to help GW complete a 5-0 week. The sophomore from Henderson, Nev., had four multi-hit and three multi-RBI efforts on the week. Six of her nine hits went for extra bases with four doubles and a pair of home runs. On Wednesday, Ponce went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a home run with two RBI and two runs scored in a 6-2 win over Delaware State. She went deep again Saturday as the Colonials beat Saint Louis 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader and then cracked a pair of doubles to help them win the second game 9-1 in five innings. In Sunday's finale, Ponce went 2-for-2 with a walk, highlighted by a two-run double.

Aughinbaugh has turned her game up a notch in conference play and this weekend fired two complete games, one a shutout, over Dayton to secure a third straight series win to start league play. The junior allowed just one run over 14 frames with nine hits allowed and five strikeouts. In game one, Aughinbaugh maintained a shutout until a seventh-inning solo shot broke it up. She tossed a three-hit shutout on Sunday with just three base runners allowed, all on singles, with two strikeouts. For the weekend, she had a 2-0 record with a 0.50 ERA. In league action, Aughinbaugh has a 5-0 record, 1.79 ERA, and five complete games over 39.0 innings.

As Dayton's everyday shortstop, Cacini went 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate over five starts for the Flyers. She was a perfect 3-for-3, including a home run, in Dayton's come-from-behind 6-5 win over Morehead State Wednesday. In UD's first game at Fordham Saturday, Cacini knocked out her third home run of the season and followed that by drawing four walks in the nightcap against the Rams. For the week, she tallied seven putouts and 10 assists while posting a .562 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage.
