Michael and Ansbro Earn A-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham senior Kylie Michael and George Mason junior Bekah Ansbro were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. Massachusetts freshman Danielle Ellis earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards are for games played April 8-14.
Michael returned from an injury lay-off with the best week of her career, helping Fordham to five straight conference wins at St. Bonaventure and at home against Saint Louis. The catcher from Chino Hills, Calif., paced the Rams' offense with a .688 batting average, a .722 on-base percentage, a 1.375 slugging percentage, three home runs, and 12 runs batted in. The senior went 11-for-16 at the dish with at least one hit in every game, four multi-hit performances, and five total extra-base hits, also scoring four times and walking twice. In game one at St. Bonaventure, Michael went 1-for-3 with an RBI single but upped her game with a 2-for-3 showing in game two with her first career home run, a two-run shot, and an RBI single, plus a walk. In the series opener against the Billikens, Michael led the way by going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles and then went 2-for-2 with a bases-clearing double, providing the go-ahead run, a solo home run, and a walk. In the series finale, Michael again went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run to put the Rams up 8-0, which would’ve been a run-rule win had Saint Louis not rallied in the fifth, and a two-run double for what proved to be the go-ahead run. Michael is now slashing .295/.411/.475 overall this season over 28 appearances with more walks (12) than strikeouts (8). Over 10 conference contests, she is leading the team with a .522/.607/1.000 slash line.
Ansbro gave up just three hits and totaled nine strikeouts in 11.1 innings of work over three appearances. In her lone start of the week, the Woodstock, Va., product tossed a one-hitter, complete-game shutout in Mason's 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's. She struck out three batters against two walks. In a relief appearance against Coppin State, she struck out five batters in 3.0 innings of work, giving up one walk. In her final appearance of the weekend, she pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one batter and allowing only one hit in Mason's 3-0 loss to SJU.
Ellis hit a .750 batting average in three starts with three RBI and a .875 slugging percentage. The Vista, Calif., native reached base safely in all three games in a series win over George Washington, going 3-for-3 with a doubleheader and a walk in a game one comeback win. Ellis did not commit a single out in the Saturday doubleheader, picking up two hits with two RBI and two runs scored in a 14-1 game two win. She also drove in a run with a single in game three.
