Spider's Schmidt Named Player of the Week; Patriot's DiCesare Picked for Pitcher Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond senior Kyle Schmidt was named Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while George Mason junior Jared DiCesare was selected as the A-10 Pitcher of the Week. La Salle freshman Tatem Levins was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played April 15-21.
A catcher from Smithville, Schmidt hit for a .368 average to help the Spiders to a 2-2 week, including a 2-1 record against league-leading VCU. He tallied seven hits, four of which were for extra bases, including three home runs. Schmidt provided game-winning runs in two of the three games with VCU, crushing a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game, and scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th in the final game of the series with VCU. He scored at least one run in all four games including and had multi-hit efforts in three of four games. He also added a solo home run in the second game of the doubleheader with VCU on Saturday.
DiCesare pitched a season-high 8.0 innings and struck out a season-high nine batters in Mason's 2-0 win over Dayton in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. A right-hander from Chantilly, Va., he allowed just three hits in the outing, a season-low.
Levins hit .412 with seven RBI over a 2-2 week for La Salle. He homered twice and scored four runs in a three-game series at Saint Joseph's. A catcher from Langhorne, Pa., he went 2-for-4 in a win over Penn on Tuesday and then was 3-for-5 with two homers, five RBI and a double at Saint Joe's on Thursday. Levins capped off the week with a 2-for-4 game with two RBI against the Hawks on Saturday.
