Spiders Advance to Face Top-Seeded UMass in #A10WLAX Championship Final

Fairfax, Va. -- The third-seeded Richmond Spiders look to defend their 2018 championship title in Sunday’s 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship Final against Massachusetts after a 19-4 victory against No. 2 George Mason on Friday.

The Spiders scored four back-to-back goals to start off the game before Mason was able to respond. The Patriots scored three goals in the first half before a near-40-minute scoring drought, while the Spiders continued a consistent scoring run.

Senior Marissa Brown led all scorers with four goals and four assists, while teammates Katie Sciandra, Sam Geiersbach, Mia Castagnero added three goals each and a combined four assists. The Spider Defense led by Julie Ball and Tatiana Monds held Mason’s offense to a total of five points, and Goalkeeper Megan Gianforte contributed nine saves to the win.

A-10 Rookie of the Year Deanna Balsama had a goal and an assist for the Patriots, while teammates Chachi Kelehan, Erin Donoghue, and Hailey Johnson each added a goal.

With the loss, George Mason falls to 11-7 overall on the season.
