ORLANDO, Fla. – VCU Women's Tennis sophomore No. 77 Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Tournament after defeating No. 57 Stacey Fung of Washington in straight sets. She is set to face off against the No. 1 seed Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami tomorrow. 

After winning the first set, Diaz-Delgado went down 1-4 in the second but rallied back to win the match. This marks only the fourth time in program history that a Ram has advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Tournament.

With wins over Melissa Lord and Fung, Diaz-Delgado has kept her historical season going. Her successes began in the fall season when she earned the singles crown at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, which secured her an automatic bid into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

Throughout the spring season, Diaz-Delgado recorded the second most singles match wins (38) in VCU Women's Tennis history en route to tabbing Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year. She has now defeated seven ranked opponents throughout the course of the season.

ORLANDO, Fla. – VCU Women's Tennis sophomore No. 77 Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament after defeating No. 29 Melissa Lord of Stanford in three sets. She is set to face off against No. 57 Stacey Fung of Washington on Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m.

Diaz-Delgado dropped the first set to Lord but stormed back to win the next two sets, allowing her to advance to the second round. 

With the win over Lord, Diaz-Delgado has kept her historical season going. Her successes began in the fall season when she won the singles crown at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, which earned her an automatic bid into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

Throughout the spring season, Diaz-Delgado tabbed three Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors en route to winning the second most singles matches (36) in VCU Women's Tennis history.

RICHMOND, Va. - Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado earned the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship. She is the first VCU player to earn a bid to the singles tournament since Cindy Chala in 2015.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19.

Diaz-Delgado is currently ranked 77th by the ITA with an 8.53 average. She is also the only A-10 singles player ranked in the top 125. Delgado has played the No. 1 singles for VCU for the entire spring and boasts a record of 19-1 in dual matches.

Diaz-Delgado has earned Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week three times this season and won each of her singles matches on the way to VCU capturing its sixth A-10 Championship in the past seven years.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players.  All singles players had to have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
