NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- George Washington junior Jenna Cone was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Year, while Fordham’s Madie Aughinbaugh was named Pitcher of the Year. The A-10 announced the awards Tuesday, which also included Coach of the Year Melissa Inouye of Fordham and Rookie of the Year Gabbie Kowalik from Saint Louis.

The awards, which also included 43 honorees on the All-Academic, All-Conference and All-Rookie teams, were announced ahead of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, which begins Wednesday at the UMass Softball Complex in Amherst, Mass. The major awards, All-Conference and All-Rookie Teams were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches. The All-Academic Team was voted on by the softball communications directors.

Cone led the conference in home runs, RBI, and had the highest slugging percentage, while also sitting second in the league in hits and on-base percentage. This is Cone’s second A-10 Major Award after being named Rookie of the Year in 2017. The First Team All-Conference third baseman and two-time A-10 Player of the Week from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., broke program records this season for single-season extra-base hits (33), single-season slugging percentage (.832), career batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage for a slash line of .389/.486/.789, and career sacrifice flies (15).

Aughinbaugh sits second in the conference in innings pitched (171.1), wins (14), and strikeouts (127) with a 2.61 earned run average. The junior from Port Tobacco, Md., is also tied for the top spot at Fordham in hits (54) and doubles ( 9) and sits second in RBI with 35. Aughinbaugh was a 2018 Second Team All-Conference pitcher pick and two-time A-10 weekly award winner for the 2019 season.

Kowalik, an outfielder from New Braunfels, Texas, is tied for second on the team in home runs with six and sits second in RBI (34) and slugging percentage (.530). She scored 29 runs on 50 hits this season and sits third for the Billikens in runs and hits behind First Team All-Conference Picks Sadie Wise and Kat Lane. The Kowalik was Rookie of the Week three times this season for her performances.

In her first year as head coach, Inouye led Fordham to 26 regular-season wins including 16 conference victories en route to securing the A-10 Regular Season title and top seed for the 2019 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.

The Conference Championship, which begins Wednesday at 11:00 am, will be streamed live on ESPN+. All of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship coverage can be found on championship central at
