GW Advances to #A10SB Championship Final With Walk-Off win Over SJU
AMHERST, Mass. – George Washington pitcher Sierra Lange hit a bases-loaded single to right field to bat in Sidney Bloomfield for a walk-off 12-11 win over No. 5 Saint Joseph’s in game seven of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.
With the win, the Colonials advance to the championship game on Saturday at 1:00 for a chance at the A-10 title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Saint Joseph’s started out strong in the first inning when Molly Kapala singled in Kirstin Cox, and scored on a GW error to put the Hawks up 2-0, but the Colonials scored five runs of their own in the first, including a three-run homer from Hannah Eslick.
After six innings of back-and-forth play, the score sat at 11-11. Lange was able to hold off Saint Joseph’s batters in the top of the seventh, and an advance on a wild pitch but Bloomfield in scoring position with one out. Hawks’ pitcher Amanda Herr walked Jenna Cone to load the bases, and Lange smacked one out to right field to bring Bloomfield into home.
Catcher Jessica Linquist led the way for George Washington with two runs and an RBI, while Cone and Bloomfield each also had two runs. Eslick led in RBI with three from her home run and Priscilla Martinez had two RBI on her own homer. This is Lange’s third full game pitching.
The Hawks were led by Cox and Kapala with two runs and two RBI each. Sarah Ostaszewski and Taylor Marinelli each put one over the fence for single-run homers.
With the loss, the Hawks advance to play in game nine against the winner of Friday’s matchup between top-seeded Fordham and No. 2 Massachusetts.
