Hawks Field Hockey Ranked 17th in Preseason Coaches Poll
GILBERT, Ariz. – The Saint Joseph’s field hockey team is ranked 17th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive season that the Hawks have been ranked in the preseason poll after coming in at number 18 a year ago. SJU was ranked in each poll released during the 2018 season, culminating in a final ranking of 10th in the nation in the final poll.
Defending national champion North Carolina received 31 of 33 first-place votes to top the poll, while Maryland was ranked second. Duke received the remaining two first-place votes and placed third; Connecticut and Princeton rounded out the top five.
Saint Joseph's will take on six squads ranked in the preseason poll, beginning with a home game against #19 Rutgers on September 8 and a trip to #18 Syracuse on September 13. Delaware, ranked 16th, visits Ellen Ryan Field on September 20, while the Hawks close out the month with a game at #13 Boston College on September 29.
The Hawks will then wrap up the regular season with two out of three games against ranked opposition, with #7 Michigan visiting Hawk Hill on October 27 before SJU heads south to meet the top-ranked Tar Heels on November 3.
The Hawks open their 2019 campaign on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
