Akinlosotu, McCarthy Named Men's Soccer Offensive Players of the Week, McKelvey Earns Defensive Honor
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason senior Tunde Akinlosotu and La Salle senior Pat McCarthy were named Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Duquesne senior Robbie McKelvey earned the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week. VCU freshman Maverick McGann was named the league Rookie of the Week. The awards, the first weekly honors of the 2019 season, were for games played Aug. 29 – Sept. 1.
Akinlosotu, a forward from Bowie, Md., scored the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute in Mason's season-opening 2-1 victory over local rival American on Friday at George Mason Stadium. Akinlosotu’s goal came on a rebound that he buried into the left corner, breaking a 1-1 tie.
McCarthy, a midfielder from Cinnaminson, N.J., scored the game-winning goal late in the Explorers' 2-1 win over Iona in the season opener on Friday. Shortly after the Gaels tied the match at one all, McCarthy buried the go-ahead tally in the 78th minute to seal the victory.
McKelvey, a goalkeeper, turned back 14 shots in 200 minutes to help Duquesne to a 1-0-1 start. The Dublin, Ohio, native recorded six saves, including one on a penalty kick, in a double-overtime 1-1 tie with Bowling Green Friday night. He followed that with eight saves in posting his second career shutout in a 1-0 win over Oakland on Sunday.
McGann, playing off the bench, scored the game-winner against ETSU in his first collegiate appearance. The forward from Washington, D.C., forced a turnover in VCU's attacking third and dribbled through two defenders and slotted the ball past the keeper to give the Rams a season-opening win.
