Engstrom, Scarpill Named Men's Performers of the Week, Estes Earns Women's Performer of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Umass’ Erik Engstrom and Saint Joseph’s Matthew Scarpill have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Cross Country Co-Performers of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s Elaine Estes took home Women’s Performer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Saint Joseph’s Colin Kane has been awarded Men’s Rookie of the Week, while teammate Olivia Wojtiwicz was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards are for races ran Sept. 2–8.
Engstrom, a senior from East Hampton, N.Y., led the Minutemen to victory in a four-team field at the Minuteman Invitational, taking second overall in the 6K in a field of 45 competitors with a time of 19:24.
Junior Matthew Scarpill, a Warrington, Pa., native, led the way for the Hawks in the senior/junior 6K with a third-place finish of 18:56.2, a new personal best.
Graduate student Elaine Estes, from Oxford, Pa., won the individual title to lead Saint Joseph's to a first-place team finish in a field of six teams in the senior/junior race at the 2019 Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational. Estes finished the 4k at a time of 14:20:94, which was over thirty seconds faster than the next best finisher.
In the sophomore/freshman race of the Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational, freshman Colin Kane, from Franklinville, N.J., placed sixth in the 6k with a time of 19:32.4. This finish made Kane SJU's second-best runner in his collegiate debut to help lead the Hawks to the team title.
The freshman out of South Amboy, N.J., Olivia Wojtowicz, led all Hawks with a sixth-place showing in a field of 43, clocking in with a 4k time of 15:38.70 in her collegiate debut, to lead the Hawks to a third-place team finish in a field of four.
