NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dayton freshman Kyle Schmidt and Rhode Island junior Chris Francoeur were named the Atlantic 10 Co-Golfers of the Week. Schmidt also earned the league’s Rookie of the Week honor. The awards, the first of the 2019-20 season, were announced Friday for tournaments played through Sept. 11.

Schmidt put on a show in his debut performance, winning the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, his first collegiate tournament. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native started off hot by shooting a 65 (-6) on Monday in the First Round, followed by a 69 and 68 in rounds two and three. He shot 16 birdies over the course of the three days, and his performance helped lead the Flyers to a second-place finish in the Invitational. Dayton’s combined score over the three rounds was the lowest in school history.

Francoeur claimed the individual title at Colgate's Alex Lagowitz Memorial, blowing away the rest of the field with a seven-under finish. His three-round score of 209 (71-70-68) was six strokes better than the two second-place finishers. Francoeur, and Amesbury, Mass., native was the only player among the field of 96 to finish with red scores in all three rounds. His third-round 68 was the only sub-70 round of the day on Sunday, as he birdied five holes and bogeyed just one. Through 54 holes, Francoeur led the field in par-4 scoring (-4) and birdies (12). He was second overall in par-5 scoring, at -7.
