NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Saint Joseph’s senior Michael O’Brien and VCU sophomore Ian Peng were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Golfers of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Bryson Richards earned the league’s Rookie of the Week honor. The awards were announced Friday for tournaments played through Sept. 12 -18.
O'Brien captured medalist honors at the Cornell Invitational this past weekend in the Hawks' season-opening event. Entering Sunday's final round tied for third, O'Brien fired a five-under-par 66 in final round to jump two spots and earn medalist honors. O'Brien, a West Chester, Ohio native, posted a six-under three-round score of 207 (72-69-66) to win the individual title by three strokes over Columbia's Daniel Core.
Peng recorded a top-five finish for the second time in as many weeks, carding a 206 (70-65-71) to finish tied for third at the VCU Invitational. His second-round 65 was the second lowest single-round score of the tournament and he led the Rams to a fifth-place finish. The Chang Hua, Taiwan, native fired three rounds in the 60s in two tournaments this fall.
Richards tied for first place, earning co-medalist honors in just his second collegiate tournament. Overall, he was 4-under 206 (67-72-67) thanks to a pair of 67s in the first and third rounds. A product of Plainfield, Vt., Richards led the field of 78 in par-4 scoring (even) and was second in both par-3 scoring (-3) and pars made (40). Additionally, he bogeyed just five holes through the tournament's three rounds, marking the fewest among any golfer in the field.
