AMHERST, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women’s cross country redshirt senior Heather MacLean earned an automatic bid into next weekend’s NCAA Championships as a result of her fifth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Audubon Golf Course this morning. As a team, the Minutewomen took 15th out of 36 squads with 438 points, while Providence and Dartmouth claimed the NCAA automatic team bids in first and second with 84 points and 115 points, respectively.

MacLean crossed the finish line on the 6K course in 21 minutes 38.0 seconds, a mere .8 seconds behind Providence’s Catarina Rocha. The Peabody, Massachusetts, native earned a spot in next week’s NCAA meet as one of the top-four individuals at the NCAA Regional not already qualifying with their respective teams.

It marks the fifth time in program history that UMass will send an individual to the NCAA Championships and first time since 2001 as MacLean joins two-time NCAA qualifiers Kristin Cisowski (2000, 2001) and Rebecca Donaghue (1995, 1996).

Senior Colleen Sands was next across for the Minutewomen, claiming 66th in the field of 254 runners with a time of 23:04.1. Freshman Colette O’Leary was 87th overall and third for UMass at 23:20.6.

Junior Brook Hansel placed fourth for the Minutewomen and 128th overall with a time of 23:41.1 and freshman Caroline Clark rounded out the UMass scorers in 183rd, clocking in at 23:55.0.

The 6K NCAA Championships race is set for next Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10:45 a.m. in Louisville, Kentucky.
