Benn, MacLean, Oleson, Devine Claim Top Indoor Track and Field Weekly Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham’s Jared Benn and Massachusetts’ Heather MacLean were named Men’s and Women’s Track Performers of the Week, while Alex Oleson of Saint Louis and Neve Devine of Fordham were announced as the Men’s and Women’s Field Performers of the Week. The Field Performer of the Week award is a new award this year, which will be given out weekly. Davidson’s Daniel Alvarez and Katie Wissing of Saint Louis claimed Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, the first weekly awards of the season, were based off performances from meets held on Nov. 27 – Dec. 3.
Benn, a junior from Airmont, N.Y., had a great start to the indoor season, winning the 500 meter at the Fordham Season Opener in 1:05.86. He took third in the 60 meter with a time of 7.08 seconds.
Running the 3,000 meter for the first time, MacLean, a senior from Peabody, Mass., demolished the previous UMass record by nearly 33 seconds with a time of 9:03.03. She beat the UMass record, which stood for 22 years, by over two seconds. Her time ranks second nationally on the NCAA list.
Oleson, a freshman from Shawnee, Kan., broke the school record in the high jump in his first collegiate event at the Titan First Chance meet at Illinois Wesleyan. His Mark of 2.00m (6’6.75) is tops in the A-10 so far this season.
Devine, cleared a personal-best 1.65m (5’5”) in the high jump at the Fordham Season Opener on Friday, good for a second-place finish. The junior from Port Washington, N.Y., also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.26m (17’3.25) and finished 11th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.18.
Alvarez, a native of Dobson, N.C., placed fourth in the 800 meter at the JDL Kickoff Classic Saturday, crossing the line in 1:57.12.
Wissing, the Milwaukee, Wis., native took home the individual titles in the long jump 5.41m (17’9) and triple jump 11.51m (37’9.25) at the Titan First Chance meet at Illinois Wesleyan.
