Bergman, Bullock Earn Swimming and Diving Weekly Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fabian Bergman of La Salle and Amelia Bullock of Fordham were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. George Washington teammates Peter Nachtwey and Gabriella Arendes won Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week, respectively. The awards were based off performances from meets held on Jan 15 - 21.


Bergman, a senior from Stockholm, Sweden, earned seven wins in eight total events last week. In a dual meet at Atlantic 10 opponent Fordham, Bergman won the 100-yard backstroke (49.56 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.44) finishing almost ten seconds ahead of second place. He was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, finishing in 3:07.02. Earlier in the week, Bergman gathered four wins against Loyola (Md.) in La Salle’s first competition since November. Bergman placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (49.73 seconds), 200-yard backstroke (1:47.86), and 200-yard individual medley (1:51.89). He was also part of the first place 200-yard medley relay team.


Bullock was a multiple event winner at this weekend’s tri-meet with Richmond and La Salle. The sophomore from Westport, Conn., captured first in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.03 seconds and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.10. She also grabbed third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.68), while helping the 200-yard medley relay to an event win in 1:45.95.


Nachtwey continued his strong freshman campaign on the boards in Saturday’s 181.5 -118.5 win over Old Dominion. The Chagrin Falls, Ohio, native was first on the 3-meter board with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 342.23 and second on the 1-meter board with a score of 290.03.


Arendes won both diving events in Saturday’s 185-113 win over Old Dominion, highlighting a banner day for GW on the boards. The freshman from Rock Tavern, N.Y., scored 241.25 on the 3-meter board and set a career high with 264.00 in the 1-meter board competition.
