NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond’s Caleb Troy was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while George Washington’s Sara Grubac was named the Women’s Player of the Week. Also honored was VCU’s Inigo Torre Martin, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and VCU’s Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, the first of the season, were based off performances from the opening weekend.
Troy led the Spiders to a near upset of two-time defending National Champion and 12th-ranked Virginia in the dual match opener for both teams. The senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., paired with James Aronson in the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating UVA’s Matthew Lord and Ammar Alhaqbani, 7-5, to help the Spiders clinch the doubles point. He then posted a dominant performance at the top singles spot, defeating Lord, 6-3, 6-2, to put the Spiders up 2-1 in an eventual 4-3 loss.
Grubac provided the match-clinching victory for the Colonials in their season opener against Harvard on Saturday. With the match tied at 3-3, Grubac needed to defeat Harvard’s Neha Gupta, ranked 113 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, to secure the GW win. The Belgrade, Serbia, native took the first set in extra points, defeating Gupta 7-6(4). With only one more win needed to edge the Crimson, Grubac continued to battle and came up on top, 6-4, to complete the 4-3 GW victory.
Torre Martin, a freshman from Bilbao, Spain, won all three of his matches at the No. 4 singles position across a 3-0 weekend for the Rams at the VCU 4-1 Invitational. He only lost one set over the weekend.
Diaz Delgado, a freshman from Almeria, Spain, won both her matches in straight sets at the No. 2 singles position during a 2-0 weekend for the Rams at the VCU 4-1 Invitational. Three of her four set victories were won with a 6-0 scoreline.
