NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s Kevin McDonnell and Charlotte’s Katrina Wright were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Chris Tate of Charlotte received Men’s Rookie of the Week honors and VCU’s Verna Hilaire-Lee was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards announced are for meets competed April 8-14.
McDonnell, a graduate student from Moorestown, N.J., shattered Saint Joseph’s 31-year old school record in 10,000 meters with a time of 29:16.01 at Bucknell’s Bison Outdoor Classic this past weekend. McDonnell’s time was good enough for a second-place overall finish out of a total of 56 competitors.
Wright, a junior, earned Women’s Performer of the Week honors after competing in both the Discus and the Hammer Throw at the N.C A&T Aggie Invitational. The Greencastle, Pa., native, recorded first-place finishes in both events with a mark of 154’8 in the Discus and 168’4 in the Hammer Throw.
Tate, a freshman from Chambersburg, Pa., received Men’s Rookie of the Week honors after recording a time of 48.47 in the 400 meters at this past weekend’s N.C A&T Aggie Invitational. Tate’s time currently ranks as the fourth-best 400 meter mark in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Hilaire-Lee, a freshman from Winchester, VA., placed seventh in a field of 70 runners in the 200-meters at this past weekend’s George Mason Invitational with a time of 24.58.
