CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Rhode Island men’s squad and the University of Dayton women’s team lead the 2013 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships after day one of competition at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.
The Rams lead the way on the men’s side with 73 points following strong performances in the Hammer Throw, High Jump, Javelin Throw and Discus. Rhode Island’s William Janes (Hammer Throw), Jordan Burandt (High Jump) and Jonathan Stevens (Javelin) all captured individual A-10 titles for the Rams. Rhode Island’s Mike DiMambro and Trent Baltzell also currently find themselves on top of the standings after day one of the Decathlon with 3,594 points and 3,593 points respectively.
Defending Men’s Outdoor Champion, Charlotte, is currently in second-place with 61 points. The 49ers were been led by strong performances in the Discus, High Jump and Long Jump. Recording first place-finishes for Charlotte was Jake Deaton, Elias Still, and Trey McRae. Charlotte’s Anthony Bynum set a new A-10 Conference Championship record with a time of 20.67 in the 200-meter preliminaries.
Rounding out the top three after day one of competition is Temple with 31 points, followed by Saint Joseph’s (22), VCU (22), Butler (20), Duquesne (20), Xavier (18), La Salle (17), Fordham (14), Massachusetts (10), Richmond (4) and Saint Louis (0).
On the women’s side, Dayton leads the way with 66 points. The Flyers were led by a first-place finish in the Pole Vault by Katrina Steinhauser and second-place finishes in the High Jump, Pole Vault and the 3,000-meter Steeplechase.
Chasing Dayton after day one are Duquesne (43), Rhode Island (40), Massachusetts (36), VCU (32), Charlotte (25.5), Saint Louis (20.5), Temple (14), Butler (10), Xavier (7), Saint Joseph’s (6), Richmond (6), La Salle (3) and Fordham (1).
