NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle’s Alfredo Santana and Duquesne’s Brittney Edwards were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Benjamin Ezike of Rhode Island received Men’s Rookie of the Week and Charlotte’s Alvonna Blakney was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards announced are for meets competed April 1-7.
Santana, a senior from Philadelphia, Pa., garnered Men’s Performer of the Week after competing this past weekend in the 5,000-meters at the Colonial Relays. Santana recorded a second-place finish in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:00.93. Santana’s time bested his previous personal best by over 20 seconds and finished less than one second behind second-team All-American Kevin Williams of Oklahoma.
Edwards, a junior, earned Women’s Performer of the Week honors after competing in the Triple Jump and the Long Jump this past weekend at the Colonial Relays. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native placed first in the Triple Jump with a mark of 40-1.25 and third in the Long Jump with a distance of 19-00.50.
Ezike, a freshman from Staten Island, N.Y., received Men’s Rookie of the Week after recording a fifth-place finish in the Triple Jump (46-01.50) and a sixth-place finish in the Long Jump (21-10.25) at the Sam Howell Invitational.
Blakney, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., captured Women’s Rookie of the Week honors after recording a personal best time in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.00 at this past weekend’s Florida Relays. Blakney also ran on the shuttle hurdle team that set a new school record with a time of 56.70.
