Wellington, Owusu, Freeman and Briales Earn First A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s Jason Wellington and Saint Louis’ Naya Owusu have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week, respectively, for meets held March 17-23, the league announced Monday. Also honored were Mason’s Bernard Freeman, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and VCU’s Ariel Briales, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week.

Wellington, a senior from Alexandria, Va., finished first in the Hammer Throw at this past weekend’s VCU Invitational with a throw of 51.10 meters (167’8), setting a new personal and school record.

Owusu, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., recorded a mark of 5-5.25 meters and a first place finish in the High Jump at the Billiken Kickoff.

Freeman, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., posted a time of 22.24 in the 200 meters en route to a third-place overall event finish at the VCU Invitational. Freeman was also a member of the Mason 4x400 Relay team that finished first with a time of 3:13.23.

Briales had a special day for the Rams in her first ever run of the 3000 meter steeplechase at the VCU Invitational. The freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., posted a winning time of 11:25.75 and was within a half of a second of VCU's 11-year old school record.
