McCarthy and La Salle Upend Dayton in Penalty Kicks
DAYTON, Ohio – La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy made 12 saves in addition to a pair in penalty kicks to help the Explorers advance past Dayton and into the semifinals of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship.
The fourth-seeded Explorers improve to 9-7-3 on the year and will face top-seeded Saint Louis in tomorrow’s second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Dayton ends its season with a 14-3-2 mark.
La Salle got on the board at the 13:50 mark after the Dayton keeper misplayed a clear attempt and reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Jason Plumhoff was able to collect the ball and score an uncontested goal.
Dayton got the equalizer in the 32nd minute Greg Enstone collected a rebound of a Amass Amankona shot and beat McCarthy to make it 1-1.
The score remained that way through the remainder of regulation largely in part to McCarthy who made eight stops in the second-half alone, including several at point blank range.
After the two overtime periods, Dayton missed its first two penalty shot attempts, while La Salle converted one of its first two. Each team connected on their third attempt. Following a conversion by the Explorers, McCarthy turned away Dayton’s fourth attempt to give La Salle the win.
Dayton out shot La Salle 31-16, including 19-7 in the second half and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
