DAYTON, Ohio – After 110 minutes of scoreless play, reigning Rookie of the Year Steffen Kraus made a pair of stops in penalty kicks to vault second-seeded  George Mason past seventh seed Saint Joseph’s in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship.

Mason (10-2-5) advances to the semifinals where it will take on the winner of No. 3 VCU and sixth-seeded Duquesne.  Saint Joseph’s ends its season 5-8-6.

Saint Joseph’s carried the play in the first-half, registering six first-half shots, forcing Krauss to make a pair of key stops to keep the Hawks off the board.

Each team got off five shots in the second stanza but neither was able to find the back of the net.

The Patriots’ Zach Herstek had a shot to end the match early in the first overtime but his point blank shot was turned away by Hawks keeper Andrew D’ Ottavi.

Late in the second overtime, George Mason was able to get a shot past D’Ottavi but Brendan Reilly was able to clear the shot off the goal line and keep the match going.

Each team connected on their first two penalty shots, before Krauss was able to break the stalemate and send Mason to the semifinals.

Each team recorded 15 shots, with Krauss and D’Ottavi each turning away five shots.  George Mason held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.
