CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte's Tyler Gibson scored on a penalty kick with only 11 seconds left in regulation to help the top-seeded 49ers survive #8 Duquesne, 2-1, during the quarterfinals of the 2012 A-10 Men's Soccer Championship, Thursday at Transamerica Field.
With the victory, Charlotte (14-2-3) advances to Friday's second semifinal game, where the 49ers will square off against fourth-seeded VCU (11-2-5); while Duquesne concludes its season with a 7-12-1 overall mark.
Charlotte scored right out of the gate, as Jennings Rex found the back of the net just one minute into the contest off a ball from Giuseppe Gentile. Duquesne did not wait long to retaliate, knotting the match at, 1-1, in the 15th minute off a goal from Martin Fiemawhle - his first of the season.
The two teams remained tied throughout the rest of the outing, until Duquesne's foul in the box allowed for Charlotte's game-winning penalty kick in the final minute.
Prior to the #1 Charlotte/#4 VCU match, #2 Saint Louis and #3 Xavier will take the pitch at 5:00 p.m. The two semifinal matches (weather pending) are scheduled to be webcast free of charge through the A-10's online home -- Atlantic10.com.
