CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fourth-seeded VCU’s Mario Herrera Meraz scored the golden goal in the 90th minute to propel the Rams to the 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Temple in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship, Thursday at Charlotte’s Transamerica Field.
With the victory, nationally-ranked VCU (11-2-5) advances to the semifinals in its first appearance in the A-10 Championship, while Temple concludes it season with a 10-6-3 overall mark. The Rams will face the winner of the #1 Charlotte/#8 Duquesne contest.
The two teams remained scoreless for nearly 90 minutes before VCU’s Mario Herrera Meraz found the back of the net with 89:13 on the clock, connecting on a pass from Nate Shiffman.
The two semifinal contests will be played on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., while the league championship is set to air nationally on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4:00 p.m.
