SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - Atlantic 10 newcomer VCU cemented a spot in its first A-10 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals after defeating Saint Joseph's, 4-0 Thursday night at the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship at the Rhode Island Soccer Complex.
The Rams (12-4-4) scored back-to-back goals nearing the end of the first half against the Hawks. VCU then added a pair of goals in the second half to claim the victory. The Rams earned their tenth shutout of the season, good for second in the Atlantic 10.
On a pass from Gabby Wilson in the 37th minute, Maren Johansen found the back of the net to give the Rams a 1-0 lead late in the half. Minutes later, Breianna White lobbed a ball into the box, forcing Christine Neal back towards the goal. Sophomore Cristin Granados collected the loose ball and scored the second VCU goal of the game.
In the 72nd minute, freshman Bex Kunz scored off a corner kick from Taryn Cressy, expanding VCU's lead. With five minutes left in the game, Granados notched her second goal of the game off a cross in front of the net from senior Aisha Allen, for a final score of 4-0. Granados took eight shots, including three at Saint Joseph's Neal.
With the win, VCU earned the final spot in the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals and will face second-seeded Dayton at 7:30 pm. The first semifinal game will feature top-seeded La Salle vs. fourth seeded Butler at 5:00 pm. The Hawks finished its season 9-4-1.
