SOUTH KINGSTON, R.I. - The second-seeded Flyers continued its Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship success Thursday, advancing to the semifinals with a 4-1 win against seventh-seeded Massachusetts.
The Flyers advance to the semifinals and will face either third-seeded VCU or sixth-seeded Saint Joseph’s tomorrow at 7:30 pm.
Dayton (14-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with a goal from sophomore Kelsey Smigel on a midfield pass from junior Stephanie Emery.
The Flyers led a constant offensive attack against the Minutewomen, exploding for three goals in the second half. In the 48th minute, sophomore Haley Keller floated a shot just over the hands of keeper Emily Cota, ricocheting off the top bar and into the net, extending the Flyers’ lead, 2-0.
The Minutewomen struck back five minutes later with a header from sophomore Moa Mattsson to bring the score within one. Grace Combs sent a free ball into a crowded Dayton box, setting up Mattsson’s twelfth goal of the year in the 53rd minute.
On the next trip down the field, the Flyers won possession and sent a pass into rookie Ashley Campbell who chipped a shot over Cota and into the goal. Campbell’s twelfth goal of the season put the Flyers on top, 3-1.
Dayton added an insurance goal in the 64th minute off a pass in front of the net from senior Colleen Williams to Juliana Libertin who also notched her twelfth goal of the season. The Flyers registered 27 shots in the contest, firing eleven shots on goal.
Massachusetts finished its season at 9-10-1.
