NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey and Women’s Soccer Championships will take place as scheduled this weekend. Both sites were spared damage from Hurricane Sandy, and are accessible for teams and fans, and ready for competition.
The women’s soccer championship is being played at Rhode Island’s soccer complex and begins Thursday at 11:00 am with quarterfinal matches. The semifinals will be played Friday and Sunday is the championship match.
“Although major portions of the coastline of Rhode Island took the brunt of the Hurricane Sandy, the University of Rhode Island's Kingston campus weathered the storm,” Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. “The URI Soccer Complex is in great shape and ready to host the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship. Thanks to Sue Bergen, Walter Boyle and our grounds crew - they have done an exceptional job in making sure the pitch is ready and the tournament will run smoothly. We look forward to some great weather and great soccer action.”
Massachusetts is hosting the field hockey championship at Richard F. Garber Field beginning with the semifinal games Friday. The championship game is Saturday at 2:00 pm
"We are very fortunate to come through Hurricane Sandy unscathed and are looking forward to an exciting and highly competitive championship weekend,” UMass Director of Athletics John McCutcheon said.
Fans, alumni and families are reminded their safety is a top priority when travelling to the championships. Log on to the Atlantic10.com for all championship information, including schedules, results, live links and ticket information.
