NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Rhode Island’s Maggie MacDonald and Dayton’s Ashley Campbell have earned Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, the league office announced on Monday morning. The awards are for games played October 19-21.
MacDonald was named Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goals in both contests against conference foes George Washington (Oct. 19) and Charlotte (Oct 21). On Friday night, the senior midfielder scored the only game of the match in the 27th minute, giving the Rams a 1-0 first half lead that would hold up against George Washington. The Hanson, Mass., native then scored her third goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in a 2-0 victory over Charlotte on Senior Day. With two wins last weekend, Rhode Island improved to 10-7-1 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play and will wrap up its A-10 schedule on the road at Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.
Campbell was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, after contributing three goals and two assists last weekend, including a career-high five points in Dayton’s 3-0 win over St. Bonaventure (Oct. 19). The Bradford, Ontario, midfielder tallied her ninth and 10th goals of the season and added an assist on Colleen Williams’ score in the Flyers’ shutout versus the Bonnies. In Sunday’s (Oct. 21) 4-0 win against Duquesne, Campbell also contributed to the offense, scoring one goal and dishing an assist to Juliana Libertin for the second goal of the opening half. The two-time Rookie of the Week is tied for second overall in the A-10 with 11 goals, including four game-winners, and is third overall in points (25). The Flyers improved to 12-4-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the Atlantic 10, second only to La Salle, and will finish up conference play at home against Richmond and VCU.
