SOUTH KINGSTON, R.I. - Fourth-seeded Butler advanced to the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Semifinals after defeating No. 5 St. Bonaventure, 1-0 in a tough fought contest Thursday afternoon. Butler (12-4-4) moves on to the semifinals and will face top-seeded La Salle, who defeated Charlotte in the first quarterfinal, on Friday at 5:00 pm.
After almost a period and a half of scoreless play, Butler got on the board with a beautiful shot from sophomore Kelly Mahoney in the 77th minute. Sophomore Elise Kotsakis crossed the ball from the top of the penalty box to a wide open Mahoney on the far post who drilled it into the back corner of the goal past a diving Katie Kerkman.
Butler, who is in the midst of its winningest campaign since 2002, tallied 11 shots in the match, while the Bonnies fired seven shots. Both Kerkman and Butler goalkeeper Julie Burton made one save in the one-goal battle.
St. Bonaventure kept the pressure on throughout the game, but was unable to score against Butler, who leads the A-10 in goals against average (.66) and shutouts (11).
The Bonnies finish their season at 8-11-1.
