Nov. 1, 2012

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple’s Amber Youtz was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year and Massachusetts’ Lauren Allymohamed earned Defensive Player of the Year in voting conducted among the league’s eight head coaches.

In that same vote the coaches tabbed Richmond’s Taylor Deitrick as Rookie of the Year and Massachusetts’ second-year head coach Carla Tagliente as Coach of the Year.

Starting in all 20 games this season, Youtz leads the Owls in points (52), goals (21) and game-winning goals (4). Posting impressive stats, the sophomore forward is ranked sixth in the nation in goals per game (1.05) and seventh nationally in points per game (2.60). Youtz also received honors as a member of the 2012 All-Conference first team and is a two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honoree for the 2012 season.

Allymohamed garnered Defensive Player of the Year after only allowing 1.69 goals per game overall and 0.86 in conference play. The sophomore defender held 16 of 20 opponents below average shots per game, including six of seven in league play. The Defensive Player of the Year was also named to the 2012 All-Conference first team.

Deitrick started 16 of 19 games for the Spiders this season. Scoring 11 goals and 23 points, the rookie holds Richmond’s number two spot for the most goals and points posted for the 2012 season. In addition to Rookie of the Year, Deitrick was named to the 2012 All-Conference second team and All-Rookie team.

Youtz and Allymohamed are joined on the All-Conference first team by Massachusetts’ Thando Zono, Nicole Cordero, and Kim Young, Richmond’s Rebecca Barry, Amy Cooke, Chelsea Davies, and Anna Zarkoski, Temple’s Katie Briglia, and Kelsey Scherrer of VCU.

Joining Deitrick on the second team are La Salle’s Neelam Kumar, Rebecca Chylack, and Olivia Shoemaker, Nakira Downes of Lock Haven, Massachusetts’ Sam Carlino and Noralie Weusthuis, Saint Joseph’s Jordan Martin, Caiti Brownell of Saint Louis, and VCU’s Stephanie DeMasi and Arialle Hess.

Making up the All-Rookie team are Lock Haven’s Nakira Downes, Stephanie Ebersole, Massachusetts’ Noralie Weuthuis and Sam Carlino, Richmond’s Amy Cooke, Taylor Deitrick, and Kerri McDonald, Rachel Brosious of Saint Joseph’s, Temple’s Alyssa Delp and Taylor Shronk, and Kendall Farino of VCU.

Additionally, 11 student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Conference team. To be nominated, a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) for her entire academic career.

Making up the 2012 Academic All-Conference team are Becca Chylak and Janel Paukovits of La Salle, Nikki Weaknecht of Lock Haven, Massachusetts’ Kim Young, and Thando Zono, Liesl Schnuck of Richmond, Meghan Githens of Saint Joseph’s, Temple’s Katie Briglia, and VCU’s Stephanie DeMasi, Melanie Marotta, and Megan Botteri.

In her second season as the head coach of the Minutewomen, Tagliente has coached her squad to their second A-10 Championship appearance under her leadership. The Minutewomen finished the 2012 regular season with an overall record of 12-8 and 6-1 in conference play.

The 2012 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship begins Friday, Nov. 3, at the University of Massachusetts’ Garber Field. For complete coverage, including free live streaming, log on to www.atlantic1o.com.
