NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On the heels of a 5-0 start to the season, Massachusetts has jumped up to No. 7 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.

The NFHCA released its first weekly top-20 poll, listing the Minutewomen as the No. 7 team in the country. UMass, which started the season at 14th in the preseason rankings, is the only team in NCAA Division I with five victories as of Sept. 10. Ahead of the Minutewomen are North Carolina (No. 1), Maryland (2), Princeton (3), Connecticut (4), Virginia (5) and Syracuse (6). Iowa, Duke and Stanford round out the top-10.

UMass has been led by two-time A-10 Player of the Week Brooke Sabia. The Lafayette Hill, Pa., native ranks first among all Atlantic 10 field hockey players for points and goals and is tied for the top spot in game-winning tallies (2). Among all student-athletes competing in NCAA Division I field hockey, Sabia ranks tied for first with Virginia's Elly Buckley and Caleigh Foust while tying for second in points this season with Foust and Boston College's Emma Plasteras.

Massachusetts will head to the Syracuse Invitational this weekend where it will face the sixth ranked and host Orange on Friday and Ohio State on Saturday.
