Farquhar Names Saint Joseph's Field Hockey Coach

Farquhar Selected as 11th Head Coach in Program History

PHILADELPHIA – Director of Athletics Don DiJulia announced today that Lynn Farquhar has been named the new head field hockey coach at Saint Joseph’s University.  Farquhar, most recently the associate head coach at the University of Delaware, is the 11th head coach in program history.

“Lynn has been part of academic and athletic excellence her entire career, both as a student-athlete and a coach, at every institution,” DiJulia said.  “We are pleased to have her work to develop our student-athletes into everyday champions.”

Farquhar has served as an assistant at four Division I programs and helped steer those teams to six NCAA Tournament berths, five conference championships, and one Final Four.  She also has a proven track record of success on the recruiting trail, both domestically and with student-athletes from around the world.

“I am excited for this tremendous opportunity and cannot wait to start soaring as a Hawk,” Farquhar said.  “As a program, each day we will choose to prepare with passion, confidence, and a team outlook.

“Saint Joseph’s is a special place and a great fit.  It exemplifies a true family setting where every individual is genuinely supported to achieve success in academics, athletics, and beyond.”

Farquhar replaces Michelle Finegan, who stepped down earlier this summer after 17 seasons as the head coach of the Hawks and setting a school record with 143 career wins.

Farquhar spent the 2013 season on the staff at Delaware, where she helped guide the Blue Hens to one of the best seasons in program history.  UD went undefeated in the Colonial Athletic Association and swept the regular season and tournament championships en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to her stint at Delaware, Farquhar served as the associate head coach at both James Madison University and Syracuse University.  The Dukes reached the CAA Tournament in both of her seasons at JMU, while Syracuse reached the Final Four in 2008, the national quarterfinals in 2009 and 2010, and four consecutive Big East Tournaments in her four seasons in New York.

Farquhar is no stranger to Atlantic 10 competition, starting her coaching career as an assistant at the University of Richmond.  In two seasons, she helped guide the Spiders to a pair of Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA Tournament berths.

She is active with the United States Field Hockey Association, most recently serving as a High Performance assistant coach and administrator at the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Championship in June.  A member of the Alliance of Women’s Coaches, she has displayed a passion about sharing the impact that sport has on life skills and development.

A 2005 graduate of Old Dominion, Farquhar was a part of the Monarchs’ squad that won the national championship in 2000.  The native of Alexandria, Virginia, was also named an Academic All-American and a regional First Team honoree during her playing career.

“I am thankful for the coaches and programs that I have been fortunate to work with and am thrilled to take the next step at a university with the character of Saint Joseph’s,” she said.  “I am genuinely excited to embrace the ‘The Hawk Will Never Die’ spirit and the energy of past, present, and future Hawks.”

Saint Joseph’s opens its 2014 slate at Lehigh on August 29.
