NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure’s Jimmy Martin and Fordham’s Megan Polaha were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored were George Mason’s Zepher Begnell and Steff Maurer, who earned Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week honors. Awards were based off performances from Nov. 11-Nov. 17.
Martin, a senior from Bristol, Conn., helped lead the Bonnies past Canisius, 129-112, with first-place finishes in the 100-yd freestyle (46.93) and the 200-yd freestyle (1:43.09) over the weekend. Martin also led off for the 200-yd freestyle relay team that set a new pool record with a time of 1:23.30.
Polaha recorded her best times of the season en route to first-place finishes in both the 400-yd individual medley (4:28.45) and the 200-yd butterfly (2:03.28) at the Princeton Invitational. The Orefield, Pa., native also recorded third-place finishes in the 200-yd IM (2:06.84) and the 100-yd butterfly (56.40). Additionally, she competed in three relay events, where Fordham captured second (400-yd free relay), third (400-yd medley relay) and fifth (200-yd free relay).
Begnell, a freshman from Warrenton, Va., recorded three first-place finishes over the weekend in a head-to-head meet with conference foe La Salle. He posted a time of 21.71 in the 50-yd freestyle along with anchoring the 200-yd medley relay (1:34.81) and leading off for the 200-yd freestyle relay (1:26.14).
Maurer, also finished with three victories for the Patriots over the weekend. The freshman from Hershey, Pa., recorded first-place finishes in both the 200-yd freestyle (1:54.11) and the 500-yd freestyle (5:06.26) in addition to anchoring the 200-yd freestyle relay team that won gold with a time of 1:37.76.
