NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s Joey Kelly was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, while Morgan Peterson of Saint Louis was selected as the league’s Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Also honored was Austin Nguyenphu of Saint Louis, who earned Men’s Rookie of the Week, while Mason’s Madison Baker was named Women’s Rookie of the Week, the league office announced for meets from the beginning of the season through October 6.
Kelly, a senior from Fairfax, Va., led the 800-yd. freestyle relay and anchored three other relays as the Patriots earned a second-place overall finish at the Potomac Relays hosted by American University. Kelly recorded first-place finishes in the 400-yd. medley relay (3:36.04) and the 500-yd freestyle relay (4:11.12) along with second-place finishes in the 200-yd freestyle relay (1:26.56) and the 800-yd. freestyle relay (6:58.04).
Peterson, a junior from Bentonville, Ark., recorded six first-place finishes over three meets as the Billikens won the Butler Invitational and defeated Western Illinois. Peterson set a pool record in the 200-yd IM with a time of 2:06.76 against Western Illinois this past weekend.
Nguyenphu earned Men’s Rookie of the Week accolades after competing this past week against Washington (Mo.), Western Illinois and in the Butler Invitational. The Southlake, Texas, native captured first place finishes in the 1,000-yd freestyle against Washington with a time of 9:56.40, and in the 200-yd individual medley against Western Illinois with a time of 1:54.33. His marks in the 200-yd IM, 400-yd IM, 100-yd breaststroke and 1,000-yd freestyle all currently rank in the top 10 fastest times in Saint Louis history, respectively.
Baker was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week after her performance this past weekend at the Potomac Relays. The Midloathian, Va., native recorded second-place finishes in the 400-medley relay, 800-freestyle relay and 1,000-yd freestyle relay with times of 4:08.64, 7:45.94, and 10:22.55, respectively.
