Shchukin, Smith, Nguyenphu and Malicki Earn A-10 Swimming Weekly Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure’s Viacheslav Shchukin and Duquesne’s Meghan Smith have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was Saint Louis’ Austin Nguyenphu, who earned Men’s Rookie of the Week honors, and Fordham’s Natalie Malicki, who was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from Dec. 2-8.
Shchukin, a sophomore from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, broke a meet and pool record en route to a first-place finish in the 100-yd freestyle at the Zippy Invitational with a time of 43.66. He was also a member of the 200-yd free relay team (1:22.32) and the 400-yd free relay team (3:00.91) that both captured first-place finishes along with breaking meet records. Shchukin would also record first-place finishes in the 50-yd freestyle (20.59), the 400-yd medley relay (3:21.37) and the 800-yd freestyle relay (6:54.15).
Smith, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., recorded an NCAA “B” standard time in the 400-yd individual medley at the AT&T Winter National Championships with a time of 4:18.77. Her performance in the 400-yd IM was good for 18th-place overall in the field. She also recorded a time of 2:02.36 in the 200-yd butterfly. This week’s award marks the third time this season that Smith has been honored as Women’s Performer of the Week.
Nguyenphu set a new school record in the 400-yd IM with a time of 3:55.93. The Southlake, Texas, native finished 18th in the event.
Malicki, a freshman from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., was the lone dual event winner in Fordham’s victory over Manhattan last week. The rookie captured first-place in both the 200-yd (1:59.55) and 500-yd freestyle (5:12.63). Her time in the 500-yd free was a personal-best of the season.
