Clendenin, Smith, Begnell and Maurer Capture A-10 Swimming Weekly Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s William Clendenin and Duquesne’s Meghan Smith have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was Mason’s Zepher Begnell and Steff Maurer, who earned Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week honors respectively. Awards were based off performances from Dec. 30-Jan. 5.
Clendenin, a junior from Ashburn, Va., helped lead the Patriots to a third-place team finish at the Orange Bowl Classic with a time of 4:13.45 in the 400-meter freestyle and a time of 2:08.65 in the 200-meter individual medley.
Smith, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., picked up her fourth A-10 honor of the season after recording first-place finishes in both the 100-yd breaststroke (1:06.16) and the 100-yd individual medley (59.92) along with a second-place finish in the 200-yd butterfly (58.14) at the FIU Sprint Invitational.
Begnell, a freshman from Warrenton, Va., earned points in three events for the Patriots at the Orange Bowl Classic. He registered a time of 24.12 in the 50-meter freestyle along with being a member of the 200-meter free relay (1:36.14) and the 200-meter medley relay (1:47.92).
Maurer, a freshman from Hershey, Pa., recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle (59.77) and was a member of both the 200-meter free relay team (1:52.29) and the 200-meter medley relay team (2:00.70) that finished fourth.
