NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second consecutive week, Fordham’s Shintaro Noguchi and Richmond’s Mali Kobelja have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was La Salle’s Mattias Glenesk, who was named Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Rhode Island’s Porshe Brown, who was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from Jan.20-26.
Noguchi, a senior from Tiburon, Calif., won two individual events in the Rams’ dual meet with Yale and Rider this past weekend. He won the 100-yd freestyle in a season-best time 45.96, while also taking home the 100-yd butterfly in a season-best time of 49.54. Noguchi also recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:42.57.
Kobelja, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., tallied two first-place finishes this past weekend against Duke. She scored 22 points for the Spiders overall as she won the 100-yd breaststroke (1:04.00) and the 200-yd individual medley (2:05.25), along with placing second in the 200-yd breaststroke (2:19.16).
Glenesk, a freshman from Austin, Texas, picked up victories in the 500-yd freestyle (4:43.91) and the 1,000-yd freestyle (9:40.48) this past weekend against Loyola (Md.). Glenesk finished nearly 15 seconds faster than the second-place finisher in the 1,000-yd freestyle.
Brown, a freshman from Columbia, Md., swam to victory in the 50-yd freestyle with a time of 24.24 against Vermont this past weekend. Brown was also a member of both the 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.65) and the 400-yd freestyle relay team (3:33.41) that finished first overall.
