NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington’s Tori Valos and Dayton’s Kayla English have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played Mar. 10–16. George Washington’s Megan Linn was also honored as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Valos, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 13-for-25 (.520) at the plate with eight RBI and six runs scored to the Colonials to a 6-1 week. Eight of her 13 base hits went for extra bases as she slugged 1.000 for the week, and also stole two bases in two attempts. She recorded a base hit in every game and had five multi-hit efforts. In the second game of a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary’s, Valos went two-for-three with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. The home run, her 25th of her career, moved her into second place all-time at George Washington.
English, a junior from Grapevine, Texas, picked up two wins for the Flyers in the weather-shortened Flyers Spring Classic this past weekend. English tossed a complete game on Saturday in the Flyers’ 2-1 win over Oakland, striking out four and allowing only one earned run over seven innings of work. She also tossed three innings of relief and was the pitcher of record against Eastern Michigan on Friday. For the week, English went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.70 over 10 innings pitched.
Linn, a freshman from Corona, Calif., batted .440 (11-for-25) with a team-high nine RBI and six runs scored this past week. Linn slugged the Colonials to victory over Saint Francis in the first game of the Capital Invitational with a walk-off three run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. She recorded a base-hit in all seven games for the week and multi-hit performances in five games.
