GW Outlasts Dayton, Rain in Softball Elimination Game

AMHERST, Mass. – Sam Dos Santos hit a 2-run single and Courtney Martin struck out seven as George Washington came from behind to defeat Dayton, 2-1, in the first elimination game of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Sortino Field Wednesday.
GW (27-22) advances in the loser’s bracket and will wait to find out their opponent based on the results of Thursday’s two winner’s bracket games. Dayton (22-24) is eliminated from the championship.
Courtney Martin (14-11) threw a complete game after lasting just two innings in their first round loss earlier in the day. The junior allowed four hits to the Flyers.
Kayla English (9-11) took the loss for Dayton as she walked six, including in the pivotal fifth inning.
The game was a pitcher’s duel for the first four innings with nine combined baserunners and three hits.
That’s when the rain that threatened all day and prompted tournament officials to move the games ahead two hours finally made their appearance.
But that’s also when the offenses were able to work some productive at-bats into the game.
Dayton shortstop Jordan Jennings broke the scoreless tie with in the fifth with a one-out solo home run to left. It was her sixth of the season as she finished with a game-high two hits.
In the bottom of the fifth, GW loaded the bases that led to Dos Santos’ two-out, two-strike hit up the middle that scored Amanda Zakeri and Tara Fogarty, giving the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
The game went into a 49-minute rain delay with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
After eight outs following the resumption of the contest, Dayton loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs and Martin struggling to get a firm grip on the ball as the rains reappeared. But Martin got Kathleen Maloof to popout on a full count to end the game and eliminate the tournament’s No. 6 seed.
