NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Saint Joseph's has captured the top seed for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, which begins Wednesday at the University of Massachusetts' Elaine Sortino Field. The Hawks receive one of two first-round byes for the double-elimination championship.
SJU, which finished with a conference record of 17-5 and an overall mark of 34-8-1, claimed the regular season crown with a doubleheader sweep of George Washington on Sunday.
Fordham and Temple tied for the second seed with league records of 15-7. Fordham (32-20 overall) received the second seed and the other first round bye due to the league's tiebreaker policy. The Rams' regular-season sweep over fourth-seeded George Washington was the deciding tiebreaker. Temple (30-24) split the regular season series with GW and will be the third seed. The Colonials clinched the fourth seed with a 13-7 conference record and are 26-21 overall.
Saint Louis is the fifth seed for the championship with an A-10 record of 13-9 and a 26-21 overall mark. Dayton, 22-22 overall, secured the final spot in the six-team event with a 12-9 conference mark, earning the sixth seed.
No. 4 George Washington will face No. 5 Saint Louis in the first game of the championship Wednesday at noon. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Saint Joseph's at noon on Thursday. Third-seeded Temple plays No. 6 Dayton at 2:30 pm Wednesday. The winner of that game advances to face second-seeded Fordham at 2:30 pm Thursday. The losers of the first two games will fall into the consolation bracket and play each other Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
The championship final, which will determine the recipient of the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Championship will be played Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. All rounds of the event, will be streamed live for free on Atlantic10.com.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for youth and seniors and free for Atlantic 10 Conference institution students with a valid ID. There are special rates available for groups and for multi-day passes.
