AMHERST, Mass. – Paige Ortiz went 3-for-3 with five RBI and a grand slam to lead No. 2 seed Fordham past No. 3 seed Temple, 8-2, at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Sortino Field Thursday.

Fordham (33-20) advances to Friday’s winner’s bracket game where it will face the Saint Joseph’s at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Temple (31-25) falls into the loser’s bracket and will meet the George Washington-Saint Louis winner on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

For Ortiz, it was her fifth home of the year as she tied her career high for hits in a game. It was the second time this season she posted a trio of hits at Sortino Field, as she matched the feat on April 5.

“I’ve been struggling early on in my at-bats, but (Dominik) left it over the plate and I thought it was a good pitch to hit,” Ortiz said. “It was a good win for the team. Temple is a great team and they know how to get runs so it was important for us to get ahead on them.”

Ortiz’s slam came in the second inning after Brianna Turgeon drove in the first run of the game on a bases-loaded single up the middle.

Fordham added to its lead in the fourth with a pair of runs. Ortiz hit an RBI single to left that scored Kayla Lombardo from second. Pinch runner Brianna Ciuffi scored on a Jamie LaBovick’s sacrifice fly to right.

The Owls broke through in the fifth with a two-out RBI off the bat of Stephanie Pasquale. Temple had runners on second and third but was unable to collect any more runs in the inning.

In the sixth, Fordham extended its lead to 8-1 when Chelsea Palumbo grounded out to first with runners on the corners as Sammie Smith scored.

The Owls got one run in the final inning when Sarah Prezioso hit a solo homer to right.

Michelle Daubman (17-7) threw her 12th complete game as she struck out six and walked three.

Kelsey Dominik (15-7) absorbed the loss as she allowed seven runs in four innings.
