AMHERST, Mass. - Saint Louis freshman Brianna Lore struck out five in a complete-game win as the Billikens defeated George Washington, 4-2, in the first game of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Massachusetts' Sortino Field Wednesday.
SLU (27-21) advances to face top-seeded Saint Joseph's on Thursday, while GW (26-22) will face the Dayton-Temple loser in an elimination game Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
Lore (14-14) scattered five hits and didn't walk any batters in her 11th complete game. She retired the first seven batters of the game and faced the minimum through 3.2 innings thanks to a double play in the third.
Senior designated player Laura Bohning went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to lead the SLU offense, which finished with six hits and five walks.
The Billikens got on the board in the second inning with a pair of unearned runs. Kelsey Biggs drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third when Jessica Van Nostrand's sac bunt was thrown wildly by Colonial pitcher Courtney Martin. Biggs came home a batter later on Elizabeth Everingham's ground out. Van Nostrand scored from third on a ground ball back to the circle.
An inning later, Lindsay Friedman led off with a single and stole second before scoring on Bohning's double down the line in left. Biggs followed with an RBI single up the middle to push the lead to 4-0.
GW fought back in the sixth as it scored a pair with two outs. Tori Valos hit an RBI double to the warning track in centerfield. Valos then reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Autumn Taylor's infield single. Both Valos and Taylor collected two hits for the Colonials.
Martin (13-12) lasted two innings and took the loss after allowing four runs - two earned - on five hits.
