AMHERST, Mass. - Jessica Mahoney threw a two-hit shutout to lead No. 3 seed Temple to a 4-0 win over No. 5 seed Saint Louis in an elimination game at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at Sortino Field Friday.
The win moves keeps the Owls (32-25) alive in the championship as they will face rival Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. for the right to play in Saturday's championship. Saint Louis (28-23) is eliminated from the tourney.
Temple got timely hits in a three-run fifth inning to set the school-record for victories in a season.
Mahoney (9-10) struck out three and worked around four walks in keeping the Owls alive.
The Owls started things off in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two-out doubles by Steph Pasquale and Kelsey Dominik. Pasquale's two-bagger was the 42nd in her career and set a new Temple record. She finished with a game-high two hits.
In the fifth, Temple pushed three runs across on three hits. Two runs scored on Ali Robinson's fielder's choice as Lacey McKeon and Prezioso used some opportunistic base running to score without the ball leaving the infield. Pasquale drove in Robinson from second on a single that appeared to be a routine ground ball but took a bad hop and ricocheted over the shoulder of Kelsey Biggs at first.
Brianna Lore (14-16) took the loss after striking out three in a complete game.
