BROOKLINE, Mass. – There was no slowing Adam Ball down Thursday. Instead, the rising VCU sophomore picked up steam to blitz his way to the 113th U.S. Amateur Quarterfinals at The Country Club.

The Richmond native defeated England’s Max Orrin 2 and 1 in his round of 32 match Thursday morning, then followed with a thorough 6 and 5 beating of Chelso Barrett of New Hampshire in the afternoon. Those victories propel Ball into the final eight, where he’ll face Matt Fitzpatrick of England Friday at 11:20 a.m.

Orrin came into Thursday as the No. 7 ranked amateur in the world by R&A and No. 13 by Golfweek. That didn’t seem to deter Ball, who surrendered just two holes to the Brit all day. Orrin pulled ahead 1-up with a birdie on No. 9, but Ball captured two of the next three hole to grab the lead for good.

Ball carried his momentum into his match-up with Barrett later in the day. By the time the pair strode to the tee box on the eighth hole, Ball had a commanding 4-up advantage. In 13 holes, Barrett was able to win just one from Ball.

Friday will bring Ball’s toughest challenge to date.

Fitzpatrick’s resume speaks for itself. Currently ranked second in R&A’s World Amateur Rankings, Fitzpatrick was the highest placing amateur at the British Open in July. He was 10-over at The Open and tied for 44th overall, ahead of notable pros Mark O’Meara, Petraig Harrington, Webb Simpson and others. He will attend Northwestern this fall.

Golf Channel will broadcast highlights from Friday’s quarterfinal matches from 9-11 p.m.
