NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced its first weekly awards of the spring golf season on Wednesday and a pair of newcomers were honored. VCU freshman Adam Ball was named Golfer of the Week, while Charlotte's Riley Davenport was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
A native of Richmond, Va., Ball finished ninth at the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, California. Ball shot a three-day total of 212 on the par 70 course to place ninth in the 57 player field. Dell's 67 in the second-round is the lowest score carded by a Rams player this season. Ball, who was playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 73-67-72-- 212 over the three day tournament, helping VCU to a sixth-place finish.
Davenport, who hails from Woodstock, GA, had a strong showing at the Bayou Coty Collegiate Championships that was played at the Redstone Golf Club, which hosts the PGA's Shell Houston Open in March. Davenport finished 31st in the 85 person field after shooting a three-day 74-72-75--221 on the par 72 course. Charlotte finished seventh in the highly competitive field with team total of 289-286--878.
