NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Charlotte's Franco Castro and Rhode Island's Branden Chicorka Co Golfers of the Week, while Brandon Matthews of Temple was tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Week.
A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Castro placed second overall at the Irish Creek Collegiate. He carded a three-day total of 72-69-65--206 for the 49ers. Castro was one stroke off of the school record with a final round 65 and tied for the fourth-best round in the tournament's history. Castro's round powered the 49ers from ninth into a tie for third and the only team of the 17 in the field under par on Sunday.
This is the second consecutive Golfer of the Week nod for Chicorka. The Enfield, Conn. native captured the individual title at the Rhody Invitational. The senior battled brutal weather conditions to compile a 36-hole total of 148 (77-71=148), helping lead Rhode Island to the team title. Chicorka sealed his victory with an even-par 71 - the low round of the tournament - during the final round on April 7. It was his sixth top 10 finish in seven starts, dating back to the 2012 Fall season.
Mathews earns his second consecutive Rookie of the Week award after finishing seventh at the Yale Spring Opener. The Dupont, Pa. native fired a 72-74--146 to help the Owls to a fourth-place team finish and five strokes off the individual lead in the 68 person field.
